Meet Armenia: my homeland
As you might have noticed already from my name and bio description I am Armenian. Hopefully, some of you are familiar with this country already. If not, this might be the first introduction to Armenia. What do you usually ask someone during the first meeting? Name, age and where they are coming from?
Why is it called Armenia?
There are some disputes about the etymology of the name. One version is the word coming from the ancient Greek Αρμενία. This name was mentioned by Greek historians in 5th -6th centuries BC. Another version is that the name derives from Har+Minini, which means “mountainous region of Minini”. It is a biblical name of the region. Armenians themselves call the country Hayastan․
How old is Armenia?
People established their presence in Armenian Highlands since the stone age. The earliest records related to Armenians are from around 2700 BC. Yea, we are old…Ararat, a mountain surrounding Armenia (now in the territory of Turkey) is mentioned in the Bible.
Where is Armenia?
Armenia is a small country in the Caucasus with the ancient history, rich culture, beautiful art, breathtaking nature, delicious food and one of the best brandies in the world. It borders with Georgia, Iran, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. You can reach it by plane or by train from Georgia.
